Career Development for Women
A recent study examining barriers to women's advancement in corporations
found that upper management, especially nearing the tops of major organizations,
is still predominantly male. Only eleven CEOs of fortune five hundred
companies are women, 26% of vice presidents and senior managers are women,
and 37% of lower-level and middle managers are women.
Part of the problem is the complacency of the corporate world in general.
Content to support a half-hearted diversity program, companies miss out
on the opportunity to nurture female talent from the lower levels up.
Experts advocate coaching for women, and evaluating the performance of
leaders partially based on how well they identify promising women.
Although the state of things is improving, upper-management is still largely
a male domain. Coaching and mentoring women is likely the best way for
companies to increase diversity.
